Essential UAE Driving Rules to Know

These topics come up most frequently in the UAE theory test. Make sure you know them cold.

🚗 Speed Limits
Highways (cars): max 100–120 km/h where signed
Urban roads: 60 or 80 km/h
School & residential zones: 40 km/h
Freeway minimum speed: 60 km/h
Dubai camera buffer: typically +20 km/h above the posted limit
Abu Dhabi: zero tolerance — cameras fire from 1 km/h over
🔒 Seat Belts
Driver must always wear a seat belt
All passengers must wear seat belts — including rear seats
Front seat requires 10 years old AND 145 cm — both conditions
Children under 4 must use an appropriate child seat
Fine for no seat belt: AED 400 + 4 Black Points
📱 Mobile Phones
Hand-held phone while driving is illegal
Dubai fine: AED 800 + 4 Black Points + 30-day impound
Texting increases crash risk by approximately 23 times
Hands-free is legal but still significantly impairs reaction time
🔄 Roundabouts
Always travel anti-clockwise
Give way to vehicles already circulating inside the roundabout
Turning right (1st exit): use the right lane
Avoid changing lanes inside a roundabout
Signal right after passing the exit before yours
🌫️ Fog & Bad Weather
Use low beam + fog lights in fog — never high beam
Never use hazard lights while still moving
Increase following distance to 5+ seconds in fog or rain
Pull off completely if visibility becomes dangerously low
🛤️ Freeways
Typical maximum: 100–120 km/h — Minimum: 60 km/h
Keep right — left lane for overtaking only
Never reverse on a UAE freeway
Hard shoulder is for genuine breakdowns only

Common UAE Road Signs

These signs appear most frequently in the UAE theory test.

🛑
STOP Sign
Full stop required — you must come to a complete halt
🔺
Give Way Sign
Let oncoming traffic pass before proceeding
⚠️
Warning Sign (Red Triangle)
Hazard ahead — reduce speed and proceed with caution
🔵
Mandatory Sign (Blue Circle)
You must follow this instruction — no exceptions
🚫
No Entry Sign
Do not enter this road under any circumstances
🔴
Speed Limit Sign (Red Circle)
Do not exceed this speed — cameras are active
🔄
Roundabout Sign
Travel anti-clockwise and give way to traffic inside
🏫
School Ahead Warning
Reduce to 40 km/h — children may be crossing
🐪
Camel Warning Sign
Animals may cross — reduce speed and stay alert

UAE Theory Test — Common Questions

How many questions are in the UAE RTA theory test?
The UAE theory test has 35 multiple choice questions. You have 30 minutes to complete it. The passing mark is 65% — you must answer at least 23 out of 35 questions correctly. This format applies in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
What topics are covered in the UAE theory test?
The test covers speed limits, road signs, roundabout rules, lane discipline, seat belt laws, mobile phone use, pedestrian priority, fog and bad weather driving, parking rules, alcohol laws, fines and black points, and accident or breakdown procedure.
What is the speed limit on UAE highways?
Most UAE highways have a maximum speed of 100–120 km/h for cars where signed. Urban roads are typically 60 or 80 km/h. School and residential zones are 40 km/h. Always follow posted signs, as limits vary by road and section.
Can I take the UAE theory test in my language?
Yes. The official UAE theory test is available in multiple languages including Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu and Malayalam at most driving institutes. Select your preferred language at the computer terminal before starting the test.
What happens if I fail the UAE theory test?
If you fail the UAE theory test you can retake it after a waiting period set by your driving school. There is no limit on the number of attempts. Most candidates who prepare thoroughly with mock tests pass on their first or second attempt.
What is the fine for jumping a red light in the UAE?
Jumping a red light in the UAE carries a fine of AED 1,000 and 12 black points, plus a 30-day vehicle impoundment in Dubai. Accumulating 24 black points in a 12-month period results in licence suspension. This is one of the most frequently tested fines in the UAE theory test.
Are the Dubai and Abu Dhabi theory tests the same?
Both follow the same 35-question, 30-minute, 65% pass mark format. However, the content differs in places — for example, Dubai questions cover the Salik toll system and Dubai Tram, while Abu Dhabi questions cover the Darb toll system and zero-tolerance speed enforcement. Always practise with the mock tests for the emirate where you are taking your test.
