Key Topics for the Sharjah Theory Test

All topics below are based on UAE Federal Traffic Law — the same law tested across all emirates including Sharjah.

🚗

Speed Limits

UAE Federal Traffic Law specifies speed limits for all road types. Speed limits in Sharjah follow the same federal rules applied across the UAE.

Urban roads: 40, 60 or 80 km/h as posted
Highways (cars): maximum 120 km/h
Highways (trucks/buses): maximum 80 km/h
School & residential zones: 40 km/h
Always obey posted signs — limits can vary
🔄

Roundabouts

Roundabout rules are identical across all emirates. Sharjah has many roundabouts — lane discipline is a common test question.

Travel anti-clockwise, keep right of central island
Give way to vehicles approaching from the left
Turning right: approach and stay in right lane
Turning left: approach and stay in left lane
Signal right before exiting the roundabout
🚦

Road Signs

UAE road signs are standardised across all seven emirates. Sharjah uses the same regulatory, warning and informational signs as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Red circle signs = prohibitory (speed limits, no entry)
Blue signs = mandatory (must go straight, must turn)
Red triangle = warning (school ahead, camel, works)
Inverted triangle = give way
Red octagon = stop (full stop required)
🚶

Pedestrians & School Buses

Pedestrian and school bus rules are strictly enforced in Sharjah. Violations carry heavy fines and black points under UAE Federal Traffic Law.

Must give way to pedestrians at all crossings
Fine: AED 500 + 6 BP for not giving way to pedestrians
Stop at least 20 metres behind school bus when stopped
Stop completely when school bus amber lights are flashing
Never overtake a school bus with flashing lights
🌫️

Bad Weather Driving

Sharjah experiences the same fog, sandstorm and rain conditions as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Bad weather rules are a common test topic across all emirates.

Use low beam in fog — never high beam
If fog too dense — pull off road, turn on hazard lights
Never stop in middle of road in fog — chain collision risk
Sandstorm: reduce speed, increase following distance
Turn on headlights when visibility is poor during daytime
⚖️

Fines & Black Points

UAE traffic fines are federal and identical across all emirates including Sharjah. Exact fine amounts and black points appear directly in the theory test.

Dangerous driving/racing: AED 2,000 + 12 BP + 30 days
Jumping red light: AED 800 + 8 BP + 15 days impound
No seat belt: AED 400 + 4 BP
Mobile phone while driving: AED 200 + 4 BP
Not giving way to pedestrians: AED 500 + 6 BP

Sharjah Theory Test
Questions Answered

Who manages the Sharjah theory test?
The Sharjah theory test is managed by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA). The test is conducted at the Sharjah Driving Institute (SDI). Unlike Dubai which uses the RTA app, Sharjah bookings are made through SDI directly or via SRTA channels.
Is the Sharjah theory test the same as Dubai?
The core content is the same — both test UAE Federal Traffic Law, road signs, traffic rules and safe driving. The main difference is that Dubai has Salik toll questions and Dubai Tram/Metro questions which do not apply in Sharjah. Sharjah does not have Salik roads. The pass mark (85%) and format (35 questions, 30 minutes) are the same.
Does Sharjah have Salik toll roads?
No. Salik is a Dubai-only electronic toll system. Sharjah has no toll roads. If you are taking the Sharjah theory test, you do not need to study Salik. However, if you drive into Dubai regularly, it is still useful to understand how Salik works as a UAE resident.
What is the passing mark for the Sharjah theory test?
The passing mark is 85%. You must answer at least 30 out of 35 questions correctly. This is the same pass mark used in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. If you fail, you will need to rebook and pay the test fee again, so thorough preparation is important.
Can I take the Sharjah theory test in Urdu or Hindi?
Yes. The theory test in Sharjah is available in multiple languages to accommodate the diverse expat population. Confirm the available languages directly with the Sharjah Driving Institute as availability may vary by location and time.
Are the traffic fines the same in Sharjah as in Dubai?
Yes. Traffic fines and black points are set by UAE Federal Traffic Law and are identical across all seven emirates including Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For example, jumping a red light is AED 800 + 8 black points everywhere in the UAE.
