Important: There is no negative marking in the UAE theory test. A wrong answer scores zero โ€” it does not deduct points. Always answer every question, even if you are unsure. Your best guess is always better than leaving it blank.

How the UAE Theory Test is Scored

The UAE theory test uses a straightforward scoring system. Each correct answer earns one point. There is no negative marking โ€” a wrong answer simply scores zero. Your final score is the total number of correct answers, which is then compared against the pass threshold for your emirate.

Results are shown immediately on screen after you submit. If you pass, you will see a green result and can proceed to your practical training. If you fail, you will receive a breakdown by topic showing which areas need more study โ€” use this to target your revision before retaking.

Topics Covered in the Theory Test

What Happens If You Fail?

Don't panic. Failing the UAE theory test is common โ€” industry estimates suggest around 50โ€“60% of candidates pass on their first attempt. The test is designed to be taken more than once if needed.
Cooling-off period: In Dubai you must wait 2โ€“3 days after a failed attempt before rebooking. This gives you time to study the areas you got wrong.
Retake fee: Each retake costs the same as the original test โ€” AED 200 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, approximately AED 50 in Sharjah. There are no refunds for failed attempts.
No limit on retakes: You can retake the test as many times as needed. However after 5 consecutive failures your driving school may require you to attend additional theory classes before allowing you to rebook.
Use your result slip: Your fail result will show a breakdown by topic. This tells you exactly which areas to focus on before your next attempt. Use our free practice tests to target those specific topics.

Tips to Pass the UAE Theory Test

๐Ÿ“‹

Know the Exact Fine Amounts

The test asks for specific AED amounts โ€” not ranges. Memorise the key fines: AED 1,000 for red light, AED 400 for no seat belt, AED 800 for mobile phone use, AED 2,000 for dangerous driving.

๐Ÿšฆ

Learn All Road Signs

Road signs make up a significant portion of the test. Focus on the difference between warning signs (red triangles), mandatory signs (blue circles) and prohibitory signs (red circles).

๐ŸŽฏ

Target 85%+ in Practice

Don't book your real test until you are consistently scoring 85% or above in mock tests. This gives you a comfortable buffer above the pass mark and accounts for nerves on test day.

๐Ÿ”„

Do at Least 5 Mock Tests

Candidates who complete 5 or more full practice tests before their exam significantly increase their chances of passing first time. Use our free mock tests covering Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

Answer Every Question

There is no negative marking. Never leave a question blank โ€” if you are unsure, eliminate the obviously wrong answers and make your best guess from the remaining options.

๐ŸŒ

Use Your Own Language

The test is available in Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and more. Taking it in your strongest language reduces misunderstanding and gives you the best chance of passing.
