Topics Covered in the Heavy Vehicle Theory Test

The heavy vehicle theory test covers all standard UAE traffic rules plus additional topics specific to operating large commercial vehicles safely.

UAE Traffic Laws & Regulations All federal traffic laws, speed limits, right of way rules, and lane discipline applicable to heavy vehicles.
Heavy Vehicle Speed Limits Maximum 80 km/h on all roads including highways. Speed cameras apply with zero buffer in Abu Dhabi.
Road Signs & Markings All UAE road signs with special focus on signs relevant to heavy vehicles — weight limits, height restrictions, truck lanes.
Safe Following Distance Heavy vehicles require much longer stopping distances. Minimum 2-second rule applies — more at higher speeds.
Traffic Fines & Black Points Exact fine amounts for all violations — including specific fines for heavy vehicle violations such as speeding above 80 km/h.
Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance Pre-trip checks for brakes, tyres, lights, mirrors, load security and fluid levels. Identifying defects before driving.
Load Security & Weight Limits Rules for securing loads, permitted weight limits, overloading penalties and vehicle dimensions regulations.
Parking & Stopping Rules Where heavy vehicles may park, restricted zones, hard shoulder rules and breakdown procedures.
Roundabouts & Wide Turns Correct lane selection and turning technique for large vehicles at roundabouts and junctions.
Fog, Desert & Night Driving Safe procedures in reduced visibility. When to use hazard lights, when to pull off the road, headlight rules.
Emergencies & Breakdowns Tyre blowouts, brake failure, fire procedures, emergency triangle placement and when to call emergency services.
Fatigue & Driver Health Rules on driving hours, rest breaks, fatigue management and the dangers of driving while tired.
Hazardous Materials Basic rules for vehicles carrying dangerous goods — markings, precautions and restricted routes.
Alcohol & Drug Laws UAE's zero-tolerance policy — no alcohol or drugs permitted. Consequences including licence suspension and imprisonment.

Heavy Vehicle Speed Limits — UAE 2026

Heavy vehicles have a lower maximum speed than cars on all UAE roads regardless of posted limits. This is one of the most frequently tested topics in the heavy vehicle theory exam.

80
km/h
Maximum Speed — All Roads
Applies to all heavy vehicles on highways, urban roads and all other routes regardless of posted limit
60
km/h
Urban Roads (typical)
Standard urban limit for heavy vehicles. Always follow posted signs which may be lower
40
km/h
School & Residential Zones
Strictly enforced near schools and residential areas. Children present
Key rule for the theory test: Even on a highway posted at 120 km/h, a heavy vehicle must not exceed 80 km/h. Cars have a different limit from heavy vehicles on the same road. This distinction appears directly in exam questions.
Abu Dhabi zero tolerance: Abu Dhabi enforces ZERO speed tolerance — cameras activate from 1 km/h above the limit. Dubai applies a +20 km/h buffer before cameras trigger, but this is NOT legal permission to exceed the limit.

Heavy Vehicle Rules You Must Know

These rules appear most frequently in the UAE heavy vehicle theory test. Study all of them carefully.

Speed & Distance Rules

Maximum speed for all heavy vehicles: 80 km/h on all roads
Keep a minimum 2-second following gap — increase this in wet, foggy or sandy conditions
Heavy vehicles have much longer braking distances than cars — anticipate hazards early
Never tailgate — fine: AED 400 + 4 Black Points
Minimum speed on freeways: 60 km/h — driving too slowly is illegal

Lane & Overtaking Rules

Heavy vehicles must use the rightmost lane on multi-lane roads unless overtaking
Overtaking from the right is prohibited — fine: AED 200 + 4 Black Points
Never reverse on a freeway — this is illegal and extremely dangerous for large vehicles
Signal clearly and early before changing lanes — heavy vehicles have large blind spots
Some UAE roads have designated truck lanes — use them where marked

Parking & Stopping Rules

Never park on the hard shoulder of a freeway unless it is an emergency
If breaking down on a freeway: switch on hazard lights, place emergency triangle 100m behind the vehicle
Never stop in tunnels — move to the nearest exit if possible
Heavy vehicles are prohibited from parking in residential and school zones
Certain roads have weight restrictions — check signs before entering

Load & Vehicle Rules

Loads must be securely fastened at all times — unsecured loads are a serious offence
Do not exceed the vehicle's permitted gross weight — overloading is illegal and dangerous
Complete a pre-trip inspection before every journey: brakes, tyres, lights, mirrors, fuel and load security
Hazardous materials require special permits, vehicle markings and route restrictions
Refrigerated or specialist vehicles must carry appropriate documentation

Fog, Night & Desert Driving

Use low beam headlights in fog — never high beam
If visibility drops to near zero: pull off the road completely, switch on hazard lights
Never stop in the middle of the road in fog — especially critical for large vehicles
Reduce speed significantly in sandstorms — pull over if conditions are unsafe
Check tyre pressure in extreme heat — tyres on heavy vehicles are more susceptible to blowouts

Driver Fatigue & Health

Fatigue is one of the leading causes of heavy vehicle accidents in the UAE
Take regular breaks on long journeys — never drive when feeling drowsy
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: zero tolerance — court-decided penalties + 23 Black Points + 60-day vehicle impound
Mobile phone use while driving: AED 800 + 4 Black Points
Seat belt is mandatory for the driver at all times — AED 400 + 4 Black Points for non-compliance

Traffic Fines — Heavy Vehicles

Test tip: The theory test asks for exact fine amounts. Memorise these figures — they appear directly in exam questions.

How to Get a UAE Heavy Vehicle Licence

1

Hold a Valid UAE Category 2 Licence for at Least 1 Year

You must already hold a valid UAE light vehicle (Category 2) driving licence and have held it for a minimum of 1 year before you can apply for a heavy vehicle category. This is a mandatory prerequisite — you cannot skip it.

Prerequisite — cannot be waived
2

Complete a Medical Fitness Test

A medical fitness test is mandatory for heavy vehicle licence applicants. This includes a vision test and a basic health assessment to confirm you are physically fit to operate large commercial vehicles. Certain medical conditions may disqualify an applicant.

More stringent than standard eye test
3

Enrol at an Approved Heavy Vehicle Driving School

Register at an RTA-approved driving institute that offers heavy vehicle training. Not all driving schools offer this — confirm in advance. Open a traffic file with your documents.

Required documents: Emirates ID, passport copy with UAE residence visa, existing UAE Category 2 licence, medical fitness test results, and passport-sized photographs.

Traffic file opening fee: AED 200
4

Complete Theory Lectures

Attend all mandatory theory lectures at your driving school. These cover UAE traffic law with specific focus on heavy vehicle regulations, load safety, vehicle maintenance, fatigue management and emergency procedures.

5

Pass the Heavy Vehicle Theory Test

The theory test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 30 minutes. You need at least 30 correct answers to pass (75%). The test is available in English and Arabic at RTA test centres.

Topics include speed limits, road signs, load rules, fatigue, fines, emergency procedures and all standard UAE traffic regulations.

Theory test fee: AED 200 per attempt
6

Pass the Yard Test

The yard test assesses your vehicle control skills in a controlled environment — reversing, manoeuvring, parking and basic vehicle handling with a real heavy vehicle. Precision matters — heavy trucks require wider turns and better spatial judgment. The test is timed with little margin for error.

Must pass yard test before road test
7

Pass the Road Test

The final road test is conducted by an RTA examiner on public UAE roads. It tests your ability to drive a heavy vehicle safely in real traffic conditions — lane discipline, speed control, roundabouts, junctions and safe following distance. Each retake costs approximately AED 200.

If you fail the practical test more than twice, your driving school may require additional training hours before allowing another attempt.

8

Collect Your Heavy Vehicle Licence

Once you pass all tests, your UAE heavy vehicle licence is issued. It is valid for 5 years for expats aged 21 or over and is recognised across all UAE emirates. The new category is added to your existing licence record.

Full process takes approximately 12–18 weeks
